Outfitting the Westerly Crew

Wright Mariner is proud to have supplied the Westerly Beneteau Dealership with Sterlingwear of Boston Peacoats and Pollen Turtlenecks for the February 2012 Vancouver International Boat Show.

The Westerly Crew outfitted in their Sterlingwear Peacoats
& Pollen Turtlenecks

Westerly wanted a sophisticated and unique look for its management and sales crew, and we think the classic 100% Wool Sterlingwear Peacoat and the Pollen 100% Superwash Wool Turtleneck (made in Lund, a small town located on the B.C. coastline) provided the professional look Westerly was aiming for. They look terrific, and we hear they received lots of compliments.

The Westerly Beneteau Dealership is one of our Coal Harbour neighbours and we thank them for thinking locally!

Laurie Wright

Have you ever wondered where the “Wright” in Wright Mariner comes from? Well, that would be from original owner, Laurie Wright, of course!

The other day I was lucky enough to sit down with Laurie and learn a little bit about how and why Wright Mariner Supply came to be and what Coal Harbour was like back when Wright Mariner first opened in 1954.

Original Wright Mariner location in 1954.
Laurie launched the first Wright Mariner location when he was just 21 in 1954. Working since he was 17, Laurie says that he'd always liked boats and that starting up Wright Mariner "just happened." When an opportunity to fill the need for a marine hardware store in the Coal Harbour area opened up, he took it; Laurie began business as Wright Mariner after Homewood Marine moved out of the neighbourhood, believing it to be a good opportunity to fill that niche.

Laurie says that when he first started Wright Mariner, Coal Harbour was a busy and bustling marine community. Filled with lots of different businesses and trades, Coal Harbour was home to Vancouver Shipyard, Burrard Shipyard, Benson Shipyard, machine shops, pattern makers, foundries, a fish cannery, Vancouver Tug (now Seaspan)... and the list goes on.

"Anybody that was anybody [in the marine business] was in Coal Harbour," says Laurie.

Since then, Wright Mariner has seen five different locations, all of which have been in Coal Harbour. The first three were on Georgia Street, the fourth on Pender Street, with the fifth move to its current (floating!) location in Coal Harbour Marina in 1997.

Throughout the years, Laurie says he's seen many changes in the boating industry and he’s been a pioneer there as well.  Laurie introduced many innovative products in Western Canada such as British Seagull outboard engines, the famous Bruce anchor and the British-made duffel coat.  To this day customers still come into our store wearing the original duffel coats Laurie sold them. The boating crowd has also been a grateful recipient of Laurie’s vast knowledge and his legendary splicing skill.

Laurie Wright
The last original Coal Harbour business, Wright Mariner has stood the test of time. You can find Laurie's name, and names of other notable Coal Harbour community members, on the ship's bell that is mounted to the west of the Bayshore Hotel by the seawall in Coal Harbour.

More...Fuel Polishing!

It's a new year and that means new projects for Wright Mariner, which of course means more fuel polishing! Interested in Wright Mariner's fuel polishing process? Have a look below for a detailed play-by-play of how we polish fuel:

Our mobile fuel polishing system is all set up beside a customer's 50 ft. sail boat, ready to polish!

Our crew has carefully laid out mats to protect our customer's sail boat.

Tarps cover the sail boat's interior.

A member of our crew buried in the engine room on board the 50 ft. sail boat. Don is removing the inspection plate for the forward fuel tank.

Our system hard at work - Fuel polishing the aft tank of the 50 ft. sail boat.

View of our mobile system from onboard the sail boat.

Make sure to keep checking back for info on Wright Mariner's other projects! Not quite sure what fuel polishing is? Read Fuel Polishing or visit our website for more info.
